Christine Close is a figurative sculptor. She studied Photography and Sculpture at Blackpool College of Art followed by Zoology at Exeter University. From here she went on to a sculpture casting course while living in Singapore.
She takes her inspiration from the grace and dynamics of the human body and the abundant variety of form found in nature. Subject personality and behaviour also play an important role in her work and observation is a key component in determining expression.
When starting a new piece of work, Christine works initially in clay. This gives her the freedom to explore and develop her ideas and also adds spontaneity to the final pose.
From the clays she then casts into foundry bronze, resin, recycled glass or cement. She is constantly exploring new media to keep her work fresh and exciting.
Christine said – “My subjects are modelled through observation, with an insight into their innate characteristics. This is something that I developed whilst studying zoology. My aim is to evoke a response in the viewer through their own interpretation of my work.”
Christine has exhibited in London and elsewhere and she also has pieces in several private collections.
