Ingebjorg Smith

My work has been described as “stunning collage landscapes of birds and animals, beautifully evocative, tactile and thoroughly magical. They have a sense of place and time that is beyond their subject, and a spirit that renders them magnetic”. All my paintings are acrylic & collage on board, using fabric, gold & silver leaf (sometimes the real thing, sometimes the aluminium version) & mono print. I sometimes grind up stone or red clay for extra texture or a slightly different pigment. I also spend a lot of time doing hill & coastal walks, looking for birds & other wildlife and trying to learn more about the habits of the birds I paint. I find living in the Highlands enormously inspiring having moved here 13 years ago from central Glasgow.

I was educated at the Glasgow School of Art and graduated in 1983 (BA hons, first class and MA). I worked initially as an illustrator for, among others, BBC Scotland Gaelic children’s TV, Scotland on Sunday and Canongate Press. I lectured at the Glasgow School of Art and designed theatre posters for 7:84 ,Tag and Theatre Highland, as well as designing sets, posters and costumes for Wildcat and Hallaballoo theatre companies.

I took a break in the late 1980s and travelled extensively in Kenya, Asia and Australia, where I transformed my illustration skills into fine art collage paintings.

In 1995 I moved to Tain in the Highlands of Scotland, which is a great base for my landscape/wildlife painting.
