George Frederick Prosser
George Frederick Prosser (1805-1882)
In 1835 Prosser was commissioned to produce a prestigious volume of lithographs entitled select illustrations of Hampshire, comprising Picturesque Views of the Seats of the Nobility and Gentry. This was followed in 1842 by the companion Antiquities of Hampshire Illustrated in the Ruins of Ancient Buildings.
By 1852 Prosser had moved to Winchester from Guildford and was advertising his business as an artist and drawing master based at No. 80, High Street, close to the Westgate. Many of his watercolours of Winchester date from the 1850’s -1870’s and afford comprehensive cover of many of the historic buildings and street scenes.
The largest and most comprehensive collection of his works is held by Winchester City Museum and can be viewed by the public.
