Framed Size  56 x 92 cm

Richard began painting in his teens. He then attended Northwich College of Art, Cheshire, and Dartington College of Arts, Devon (1970-1974).

Richard spends a great deal of time observing and sketching his subjects in their environment. Most of his wildlife paintings are finished in the studio, and much of his landscape work is painted outdoors.

He works mainly with oils on canvas. Richard has been painting full time since 1979, and was elected a member of The Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA) in 1981, and The Society of Botanical Artists (SBA) in 1986.

Framed Size 41 x 36 cm

Richard’s abstracted landscapes marked a change in direction for him. After 50 years of painting, he used his knowledge, from a lifetime of figurative painting, in his abstract work. This imaginative and dynamic style combines palette knife, brushwork and glazing to give a unique strength to each work.

“ I use the vibrant qualities of light and atmosphere to bring to life the magic within the landscape. The freedom of abstraction enables me to evoke an interplay between realism and pure artistic invention. In the process of working, I am able to embrace the pure enjoyment of shape and colour”.
