Original watercolour by Ian Fennelly. This is unframed.

Ian Fennelly graduated from Wimbledon School of Art in 1996 with a first class (Hons) degree. Since then his painting has gone from strength to strength.

Ian said, “I paint mostly in watercolours and all my subjects come from first hand experience and observation. Photographs are used as an additional reference, but the significant starting point for any picture is having been there.

“ My watercolours aim to achieve a balance between form and content. In other words, allowing the paint and water to drip, splash and dance across the paper in a natural and intuitive journey,(I work with only 3 or 4 colours)but at the same time allowing the images to come through. This is a challenge. I don’t want to be too descriptive, particularly as a lot of my images include architectural designs.

“ Watercolour has a life of its own and the fascination is in creating subjects for this to take place in. The hardest thing can be knowing when to stop. I still work with only 3 or 4 colours.”

Ian likes to travel a lot, recent painting excursions have included Venice and New York.

His work has been exhibited very successfully in many galleries throughout the country and is held in collections both here and abroad.
